Three day knitting retreat and knit along in beautiful Mendocino. We’ll knit five or more mini shawls exploring the simple math, basic layouts and adding some of your favorite stitch patterns – Lace, Gansey, Garter, Fair Isle come to mind. You’ll go home with the skills to create your own unique designs. It’s fun, it’s easy, and we’ll jump the barrier of relying on purchased patterns to creating your own.
The workshop includes:
• Learning the basic formulas and knit 5-6 basic mini shawls
• Take home sheets with formulas for the basic five.
• Discussion and instruction for shaping and adding stitch patterns, knitted on edgings.
• Creating your own designs and inserting your favorite stitch patterns.
• Learning to properly block and shape your work.
• Discussion and preview of my historical lace project.
• Second Saturday exhibit of my 19th century fine lace garment collection
During the workshop we will visit my studio to explore my 19th century lace project which includes over 75 hand knit lace patterns that were first published in1840 and during the Mendocino Art Center’s Second Saturday Gallery Reception the studio will be open for viewing and discussing my personal 19th century fine knitted lace collection.
Suitable for knitters who know how, and are comfortable with the basic knitting stitches (K, P, YO, k2tog/SSK). *
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
*Note: This class is NOT for people who do not know how to knit basic stitches comfortably.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
SUZANNE da ROSA is a master lace knitter and loves hand knit shawls. She is a part of an ongoing historical study of Shetland fine lace knitting and knits samples and garments for the Shetland Textile Museum and test knits for well-known knitting designers from Fair Isle and the Netherlands.
At Mendocino Art Center she is documenting and recreating hand knitted lace patterns from the earliest published knitting books, translating the archaic knitting terms to modern day pattern language, charting, knitting them and correcting errors in the original patterns. She is creating a series of new designs from this work with the goal of publication, gallery and museum shows.
