Students will slipcast to explore making parts for building sculpture utilizing selected molds. In addition, the technique of handbuilding will be used to create other parts. These forms will be cut and pasted, bent and twisted, and then fused using porcelain clay “super-glue” to discover sculptural compositions. Repetition in nature, surface design and the role of color, will also be discussed.


SUSAN BEINER received her MFA from the University of Michigan, and BFA from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Currently, she is an Endowed Professor in Ceramics at Arizona State University. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has received several awards and residencies. Susan’s ceramic work has been exhibited at The Mint Museum of Craft and Design, North Carolina; Magnelli Museum, France; Princessehof Keramiekmuseum, Netherlands, Wustum Museum of Fine Art, Wisconsin; and San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, California; as well as numerous galleries and universities around the country.

Most recently Beiner was a visiting artist at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel, where she taught and lectured on ceramic art as well as worked on producing her artwork.

In addition, she was an artist in residence at the International Ceramics Studio, Hungary (2013); Experimental Pottery Workshop, China (2011 & 2008); the European Ceramics Workcentre, Netherlands (2007); The Clay Studio, Pennsylvania (2005-06), the International Ceramic Center, Denmark (2003); The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (2002 and 2004); and Kohler Co. Arts/Industry program (1997). Beiner has been published in several books, including Contemporary Ceramics, Emmanuel Cooper; Masters of Porcelain, Richard Burkett; Sexpots, Paul Mathieu; and Color and Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics 1950-2000, Jo Lauria. Her work is included in The Long Beach Museum of Art, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, ASU Art Museum Ceramics Research Center, National Museum of Ceramics in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Yixing Ceramics Museum, China, as well as other permanent and private collections.

Cancellations must be made in writing, either by mail or email. If you notify us at least 21 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a refund of tuition less a $45 cancellation fee. No refunds will be made after that date for any reason due to our contractual obligations and material acquisitions. If the Art Center is compelled to cancel a class you will receive a full tuition refund. Memberships are non-refundable as they are considered a donation to the Art Center.
