This five-day workshop will explore the limitless possibilities of hollow construction in metal through the use of raising and forming techniques. Students will learn to create templates made out of paper to help them conceive of how a finished piece in metal will be. Students will also be encouraged to forage for unique natural forms inherent to the Mendocino landscape. Alternative finishes will also be introduced such as file finishes, and finishes achieved through the use of abrasives and flex shaft attachments. Unique patinas will also be covered including heat patina, fine silver finish and unusual liver of sulfur patination. Sandra will bring a nice collection of her finished one-of-a-kind pieces to demonstrate a wealth of simple, well thought out connections and mechanisms that she employs in her work. She will also bring samples of various cast pieces that she has used to make production work and mechanisms, such as clasps and brooch findings.
