Students will learn arashi shibori pole wrapping, sewing machine resist, itajime folding and clamping, including using kyokechi carved clamps. We will begin with the Japanese traditions and move on to contemporary adaptations.
Using fiber reactive dye in both thickened and immersion recipes, and thiox color remover we will create complex patterns and color. Students will work with cellulose and silk fabrics and learn silk scouring of organzas to create textural differences.
Ana Lisa will bring samples of Japanese indigo shibori and examples of her own work.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
ANA LISA HEDSTROM’s signature shibori textiles are included in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt, The Museum of Art and Design, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the de Young Museum, the Oakland Museum, and the Racine Museum. She has completed public art commissions for the Emeryville, CA, city hall and the American Embassy in Brunei. Recent exhibitions include: The Box Project: The Cotsen Collection, Focus: Fiber 2016, Quilt Visions 2016, Quilt National, 2015. She has received two NEA grants and is a fellow of The American Craft Council. She has taught at SF State University, CCA, and at international conferences.

Current MAC Members: $310
Non-members: $345 plus a $45 non-member registration fee

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS
Cancellations must be made in writing, either by mail or email. If you notify us at least 21 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a refund of tuition less a $45 cancellation fee. No refunds will be made after that date for any reason due to our contractual obligations and material acquisitions. If the Art Center is compelled to cancel a class you will receive a full tuition refund. Memberships are non-refundable as they are considered a donation to the Art Center.
