This portrait sculpting class includes lectures on anatomy, emphasizing bone structure and discussions and demonstrations on expression, age, gender and ethnic differences. Four days of intensive work are spent sculpting several portraits in water-based clay with step-by-step instruction. Morning instruction time is used for doing rapid exercises and studies of specific features. Students will work from live models in the afternoon. All classes are taught exclusively by Yon Regan. Appropriate clay is included and tools needed for this workshop will be available for the student’s use.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
WILLIAM YONDERS (YON) REGAN is an award winning sculptor whose works are considered emotionally compelling and whose commissioned portraits become family heirlooms. Under the guidance of his parents, he was exposed to a wide variety of both visual and performance art from an early age. In addition to creating visual works, he has sung in operas, plays two instruments and performed on TV.
His grounding in sculpture began in the classical method while studying at University in France. Needless-to-say, direct and daily exposure to the works of Rodin, Bernini, Michelangelo, Lombardo, Donatello and others has had a strong influence on his figurative works. As a tribute to great sculptors of the past, he has even named his favorite calipers in their honor. “Whenever in doubt, I simply consult with Bernini.”
While his central passion will always be his bronze figurative works and terra cotta busts, on occasion he has been called upon to create works that are three-dimensional abstracts in a variety of materials. He has also been called upon to use his understanding of how we as people move in and occupy space to design custom homes, communities and even a retreat center.
