We will explore the wonder of the magical felting needle, and its power to transform imagination into form, as we create these Wild and Wooly Wizards of Whimsy (think art doll gone feral). We will spend the first portion of the class directly experiencing the magic of the Mendocino Coast as we harvest materials such as driftwood, kelp and beach grass that we will later weave into our sculptures, thus creating pieces of art embodying the energy of this amazing place. We will use these found natural objects as our armature, and weave these together with wool and our felting needle, coaxing these elemental sprites to emerge into form. This wild and wooly whimsical workshop will cover the fundamentals of needle felting, which is a fiber art that uses a special needle, a foam pad and wool to create 3D sculptures. We will also be covering the use of armatures and an extensive exploration of creating facial features. No experience is necessary. Class is appropriate for beginners through advanced needle felters. Be prepared to be delighted by the wonders that emerge!
