This class will focus on the techniques for building large slab construction ceramic vessels, and will include rolling and curing slabs for stability and shrinkage control, handling large slabs, structural design elements, assembly techniques, tools, stabilizing and drying assembled pieces.
We will also touch on glaze application methods and failure analysis. This class will be at the instructor’s studio in Albion about seven miles south of Mendocino. However, the first day of class will start at the Mendocino Art Center, then we will visit a gallery where Josh’s ceramics are displayed, to see a variety of pieces, then go to Albion for the workshop.
Please bring money to pay the instructor materials fee as Josh will supply the clay.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
JOSH LATKIN, a Mendocino Coast resident since 1978, does his art work at his home studio in Albion. Josh began doing these ceramic pieces in 2011 and has developed new methods and techniques to accomplish the construction of the large ceramic vessels he builds. He previously worked in ceramics from 1973 to 1980, and has recently had the opportunity to return to ceramics and create this new style of work.
The ceramic works are high fire stoneware, with all phases of the work being done at his home studio. Each one of the pieces is hand built and unique. Much of the inspiration for these pieces comes from the desire to use new methods to create classic shapes that have been produced for thousands of years. Josh currently shows his work at five galleries in California and Oregon.
