This workshop will focus on jars and lids. If one is interested in growing as a potter, the lidded form is a natural step in the process. From cookie jars to casseroles to teapots, the lidded vessel is an essential component in advancing one’s exploration of functional ceramics. Creating a flange using calipers and examining relationships between shoulder, foot, and lid will be addressed. Additionally, we will explore lifters and knobs thrown on the lid, attached separately or creating a base to include found objects as part of the lifter. When trimming the jar, we will examine relationships between flange and lip, lid and body, paying attention to the overall form by critiquing the profile. We will combine lifter, lid, shoulder, body, and foot to create clean, strong and aesthetically pleasing containers. This class is designed for the intermediate student.
