Individuals will receive one-to-one sculpting instruction using water-based clay. Yon will provide instruction in his personal approach to realism in figurative sculpture while participants will still be encouraged to explore their own styles. Live models will be used during class.

Previous students range from beginners to professional artists. The goal of both the portrait and figure seminars is to teach sculptors how to improve their techniques and speed. Although finished pieces are not the goal of the class, students are welcome to keep any or all of the projects that they have created.

This workshop includes lectures emphasizing bone structure and discussions on expression and body language. Four days of intensive work are spent working on sculpting the nude and or draped figure with step-by-step instruction. Study from models and numerous exercises are used to assist students in understanding the intricacies of modeling the human face and figure.

Lectures and demonstrations, on proportions, anatomy and the use of planes in the construction of the body and head will be provided. The technique of preparation for firing water-based clay will be discussed. Firing services will not be provided during the workshop.

WILLIAM YONDERS (YON) REGAN is an award winning sculptor whose works are considered emotionally compelling and whose commissioned portraits become family heirlooms. Under the guidance of his parents, he was exposed to a wide variety of both visual and performance art from an early age. In addition to creating visual works, he has sung in operas, plays two instruments and performed on TV.

His grounding in sculpture began in the classical method while studying at University in France. Needless-to-say, direct and daily exposure to the works of Rodin, Bernini, Michelangelo, Lombardo, Donatello and others has had a strong influence on his figurative works. As a tribute to great sculptors of the past, he has even named his favorite calipers in their honor. “Whenever in doubt, I simply consult with Bernini.”

While his central passion will always be his bronze figurative works and terra cotta busts, on occasion he has been called upon to create works that are three-dimensional abstracts in a variety of materials. He has also been called upon to use his understanding of how we as people move in and occupy space to design custom homes, communities and even a retreat center.
