CLASS DESCRIPTION
This two-day workshop will be an all-inclusive pastel class from making pastels to pastel painting. Everything you need to know about the wonder, the beauty and the ease of "drawing with pure pigment". We will construct pastels from natural artist pigments, create painting surfaces that work best with pastels and finally paint a still life and an outdoor plein air masterpiece!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
CHANNING RUDD received his BFA at Syracuse University in New York where he grew up. He studied under the renowned Bauhaus professor Peter Piening, friend of painters Maholy-Nagy and Paul Klee. After his MFA studies with Wolfgang Lederer at the California College of the Arts he worked in San Francisco as an Art Director for Seagrams Wine Division-Browne Vintners.

While being around the wineries, he got swept up in the romantic California wine scene, started making wine, won awards and then ran his own winery and vineyard for the next 21 years while a freelance artist in the North Bay. While always the struggling artist he has been teaching 25 years; a variety of college art classes, photography, history, viticultural science and from his own vineyard of 31 varieties of grapes – wine making classes. He also has been a Wine Educator at Robert Mondavi Winery for 13 years and the Head Brewer at Mt. St. Helena Brewery for a year.

Every Wednesday for the last 10 years he has painted with his plein air group of friends. In his paintings (pastel, oil or watercolor) Channing has always felt the expressiveness and emotional need for color in his art. Simply stated “an artist must remain in touch with his inner child – that wonderful quality of enthusiasm with day to day life and be able express it in his work.” He describes his work as “California Impressionist/Fauvist/Realist/Subject-to-Change-ish.”
