Upcoming Fine Art Classes
Fine Art Department
Instructor: Spike Wademan
Acrylics is the medium he teaches with because it has a speed of application that other mediums don’t have.
With the SKY you learn how the different spectrums of color work together.
With the WATER you learn how to make the light bounce off the water and how to make the light shine through it.
With the LAND you learn how to get the depth by using the right tones and with the TREES you learn to look through the trees rather than at them. Spike also teaches you some great ‘wrecked’ brush effects to make foliage easy.
You will learn how to use body color, washes and dry brush techniques for different applications, as well as all the different uses of brushes throughout the class. There are always a certain number of ‘accidents’ and Spike will help you to see these as ‘happy accidents’ and use them to your advantage.
His students in his home country of New Zealand, at the Queenstown Art Centre (QAC) keep coming back to his classes as there is always something more to be learned from Spike. He knows how to teach beginners and those more advanced and works individually with each student throughout the class time. You will go home with a finished painting after the two days and you will have learned lots of new ‘tricks,’ as an artist is really an illusionist – presenting to the world a three-dimensional image in a two-dimensional medium.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
The advertising industry offered better prospects for young artists in the 60’s though to the late 80’s and so Spike took full advantage of that opportunity working both in London and Sydney as a full time commercial artist. Into the 90’s Spike also worked for publishing companies, illustrating many books and for the film industry as a storyboard artist.
In the year 2000 Spike, and his wife Sue, made a lifestyle change and moved from Sydney to the alpine village of Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand. Here Spike initiated the artists in residence studios at the Queenstown Art Centre where he now paints and teachers.
Spike has developed his aviation and marine art, alongside his more recent landscape paintings while in this studio and has won many local art awards. He has had his marine art selected for the International Marine Art Awards in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, twice, and he is now represented by the State of The Art Gallery in Rocky Neck, MA.
Spike like’s to call himself an ‘unplugged’ artist who has a ‘workingman's PHD’!
