This workshop is designed to build an understanding in the differences between salt and soda firing. We will be firing two kilns simultaneously side by side, our gas soda kiln and our wood salt kiln. Our wood/gas salt kiln is a large cross draft catenary arch with an internal firebox and burners to help reach temp. Our soda kiln is a smaller cross draft gas kiln. Students will bring bisqueware and we will have glazes and slips available for students.
The first day will be spent glazing and wadding pots for the salt kiln. We’ll start a fire in the kiln the first night and the instructor will give a short talk on salt and soda firing. The second day we’ll be firing the salt kiln while we load the soda kiln and we’ll fire off both kilns on the third day. Day four will be cooling day, the instructor will offer demonstrations on throwing and working with slips, continue conversations on the subject of salt and soda firing, and we will have a wood-fired pizza celebration. The last day we will unload the kilns first thing and analyze our results.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
IAN HAZARD-BILL was born and raised in Marin County. He started working in clay in high school and has continued since. He has a B.A. in ceramics and community based sustainability from The Evergreen State College. He has been an apprentice to Seth Cardew in Spain for three months, an artist in residence at the Cub Creek Foundation, studio manager at Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts, and assistant to the Director at Cub Creek Foundation before his 2019-20 residency at the Mendocino Art Center.

Current MAC Members: $450
Non-members: $500 plus a $45 non-member registration fee
There is a registration fee of $45 for each class for non-members. Current Mendocino Art Center members do not pay a registration fee and may take 10% off each class registration. The discount is reflected in the prices above. Not a member yet? You may sign up below.

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS
Cancellations must be made in writing, either by mail or email. If you notify us at least 21 days prior to the first class meeting, you will receive a refund of tuition less a $45 cancellation fee. No refunds will be made after that date for any reason due to our contractual obligations and material acquisitions. If the Art Center is compelled to cancel a class you will receive a full tuition refund. Memberships are non-refundable as they are considered a donation to the Art Center.
