The nature of clay is solid and massive. If however, the material is divided into parts, then an open structure incorporating negative spaces can exist. Where are the boundaries of the material? How tall can we go? These questions are deeply rooted in the fascination for this material and set the stage for a captivating journey of exploration. As the symbolic painting of the Tower of Babel by Breugel shows, pushing the limits of material can lead to unimaginable structures.

In this workshop, these concepts will be approached through hand building structural sculptures. Building techniques that maximize kiln space will be presented along with constructing tall sculptures in parts, elements that stack, working with multiples for installations or single sculptures. The structures will be made of parts that can either be abstract, formal or figurative.

Day 1: Construction demonstrations and planning

Day 2: Building structures

Day 3: Continue building and drying

Day 4: Underglaze/Engobe application and bisque fire

Day 5: Glaze application and fire, presentation
