CLASS DESCRIPTION

“Learning to draw is really a matter of learning to see…and that means a good deal more than merely looking with the eye.”

– Nicholaides, The Natural Way to Draw, 1941

This course focuses on developing student’s observational abilities and honing technical skills that are the foundational elements of drawing. The goal of this class is to give you the necessary tools to understand how you see and perceive visual information in the world, and how to translate these experiences onto the two-dimensional format. Designed for all levels of experience, students are exposed to a variety of methods and techniques, as well as historical and contemporary artists. Through lectures, in-class exercises and critiques, students will expand and develop their unique hand in drawing. Topics include line, form, value, movement, composition, hand-eye coordination, spatial relationships and proportion among many others.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
DANIELLE LAWRENCE is a San Francisco-based artist and educator whose work merges unconventional materials, painted imagery and three-dimensional form to renegotiate painting’s traditional anatomy and definition. Her practice addresses the conceptual nature of hybridity and material contradiction by scrambling long-standing divisions and arguments between painting and sculpture, abstraction and representation and craft and fine art. Reworking painting’s physicality creates a fluid approach to its historical form, surface and materiality opening up sites of potential to explore sexuality, gender and class.

Lawrence received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2003) and a MFA from Mills College (2011). Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in the Bay Area and most recently in Los Angeles, CA, and Brooklyn, NY. Notable exhibitions include About Abstraction: Bay Area Women Painters at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA (2017); New Abstraction at Traywick Contemporary in Berkeley, CA, (2015); Color As Space, As Sense (with Linda Geary) at
[ 2nd floor projects ] in San Francisco (2012). Public collections include the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, San Francisco, CA; C.H.O.M.P., Monterey Bay, CA; and the Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA.

Lawrence is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Painting Department at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at Galleri Urbane in Dallas, TX, and is the recipient of a fully funded artist in residence at the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts in New Berlin, NY.
