This workshop is an overview of the whole system. Fold forming is a new, rapid, easily learned way of shaping sheet metal with hand tools. It is a compositional system of metal forming that emphasizes forming using the metals characteristics. Rather than forcing form upon the material, forms are derived from the natural plasticity, ductility and elasticity of the metal. An original invention, it is internationally recognized as a new approach to working metal. Developed steadily since 1980, many schools teach it and thousands of people use the methods. Shaping is extremely efficient and fast (many radical changes in cross section and surface can be made in three to five minutes). Tools are simple; fingers, hands, hammers, mallets, anvils and rolling mills. Complex high relief forms are produced from single sheets of metal often with a single annealing. These shapes resemble chased, constructed and soldered forms. The techniques work with all metals and are applicable for jewelry, hollow ware, sculpture, enameling, anodizing, etc.
The second half of the workshop we will work with ways of designing the metal's surface, in low relief, texture and color. Control factors for free compositional choice are defined and demonstrated. The workshop will touch on roller printing, paper die work, flex shaft use, hammer patterns, chasing, carving, stamp making and chain tools. There is an introduction to European and Asian chisel work in regard to texture creation. Cloth area inlay on steel may be demonstrated. Gold applications methods for color may be included, depending on the needs of the class participant.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry Coordinator/Studio Manager.
