Upcoming Fine Art Classes
Fine Art Department
Instructor: Suzi Marquess Long
In this class students will see a trompe l’oeil rug on a board painted to look like a hardwood floor. The small “rug” has a simple design and knotted fringe. People have been known to trip on Suzi’s rugs.
The class project will be a shuttered stone window. Suzi will paint along with the students and have a finished sample available. Students will be instructed in one-point perspective and use this for the stonework and shutter.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Suzi has painted murals since 1979 when she was a sign painter in Honolulu. She painted a variety of subjects and surfaces there and returned to Marin County California in 1987 to paint mostly children’s murals. Her involvement with the Designer Showcase Houses exhibited her work in Tiburon, San Rafael, San Francisco, Moraga, Napa, and pictures were printed in Newsweek, Sunset Books, and Windows & Walls magazine three times. Suzi’s latest public mural is on the south-facing wall of the Tap Room at North Coast Brewery on Highway One in Fort Bragg.
Since moving to Mendocino in 2006 and opening her Watertower Gallery, Suzi has painted and sold hundreds of pastel paintings and has taught travel-journal sketching to over 1000 students. She has also been a pastel instructor here at the Mendocino Art Center. She thinks it is time to regenerate Trompe L’Oeil since her pieces at Winesong! have brought so much interest.
Painting Trompe L’Oeil is about paying attention to shadows and light, edges, and relationships; i.e. what is that next to, where do those things touch, how dark is that shadow, what direction is the light, and so forth. Originally she painted in latex acrylic house paint and studied Trompe L’Oeil at the Day Studio in San Francisco. Suzi is excited to teach some tricks of the trade to her students and talk about some of her more interesting jobs and experiences. She’ll bring lots of press clippings that show samples of her work.
Suzi is confident her students will enjoy the class and be excited with the trompe l’oeil window with wooden shutter she has planned for them to paint. The stonework surrounding the window will make use of perspective and the students will learn some skills that will help in all their painting projects!
