No drawing experience required. Students will be provided a common reference photo to work from, plus an “under-drawing” or line art of the face already drawn on Strathmore brand paper, with the darkest value on the portrait already filled in. Students will also receive a visual Step-by-Step of how the instructor created the same portrait as in the workshop, plus a written Step-by-Step that explains the process. The focus of the portrait will be in applying lighter values that are to be compared with the one provided, understanding the layering of color, and studying information in order to apply detail. A limited number of 8 Prismacolor brand colored pencils will construct the face, and a box-set of 10 Caran D’ Ache brand Neocolor will allow for expressive texture and mood in the background and areas of the face as well.

Students will discover how to “sculpt” the face with values that describe shadows, note how the shadows have shapes that imply the topographical nature of the face, and see how color can glaze over those shadow shapes in translucent layers. Students will see how subtle values give character to the face, and detail is key to achieving a “likeness” in the portrait. Instructor will conduct a series of demos, plus take time to instruct students individually during the course of the workshop.

An award-winning artist, instructor, and judge, PEGGY MAGOVERN’s medium of choice is colored pencil. And although much of her work consists solely of colored pencil, there are other images where she combines this medium with chalk, oil, and/or wax pastel, as well as watercolor and paper collage. With over 15 years of experience as a colored pencil instructor for both private and group classes, Peggy has also directed workshops throughout much of California. But prior to her career in teaching, Peggy worked in the competitive field of commercial illustration, using colored pencil to render highly detailed, hand-drawn images for fashion and editorial projects in both advertising and publishing. Her work appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian Books, Oxford University Press, and the iconic Banana Republic catalog where she worked as Senior Illustrator. When deciding to enter the fine art field, Peggy used her skill of colored pencil to explore uniquely different forms of expression in her work. Represented in galleries in locations that include Carmel, San Francisco, the Bay Area, and Mendocino, her art also hangs in corporate offices and private homes in the U.S. and Britain. Ultimately, Peggy has combined her love of teaching with her love of creating art, and finds that world forever expanding. From instructing workshops at an international conferences, to receiving accolades in forms of “Award for Distinction,” “Merit,” “Best of Show,” and “First Place,” it is a gratifying combination indeed.
