Take your plein air or studio painting to the next level with confidence. In this workshop open to all levels, our first focus will highlight making informed design and color decisions before beginning the painting process, giving you more creative control over your subject matter. Next, we’ll focus on placing your shapes correctly, with tonal accuracy, early in your painting. Last, we’ll cover ways to control small movements in both tone and color temperature for final unity. Demos and individual instruction, in both indoor and outdoor settings, will be featured as well as group and individual reviews. If you want to expand your ability to capture image essentials with a sense of your own voice, you are encouraged to attend this workshop by master artist, Will Maller.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR WILL MALLER, a featured artist at the Mendocino Art Center's 2018 Mendocino Open Paint Out, is a signature member of the International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), Outdoor Painters Society (OPS), and National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society (NOAPs). He was named “2010 Paint the Parks100 Grand Prize Purchase Award Winner.” He was also noted as one of the 50 finalists in Southwest Art Magazine’s top “21 Artists over 31” in 2011. He began his studies at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and went on to earn his BA in Art at Minnesota State University, Mankato with graduate work at the University of Minnesota. His work has shown in Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, American Society of Marine Artists, Plein Air Southwest Salon, and Plein Air Artists of Colorado as well as being a juried plein air participant in numerous plein air exhibitions in Carmel, Telluride, Aspen and Los Gatos where he won Artists Choice Award. Seascapes and landscapes are Maller’s primary subject matter.
“I have had a love of the visual creative experience since childhood, with art being first a way of getting into trouble, then a way of staying out of trouble, and then just a natural part of who I am. Each painting begins as an invitation, proceeds as an adventure, and ends as a gift—whether a joy in itself or a lesson learned, whether just for me or to be shared with others.”
