We will fire the Mendocino Art Center's Wood Salt Kiln and Gas Soda Kiln. Students must bring bisque ware of high temperature clay. Work will be fired with high temperature soda, salt and wood firing using glazes and flashing slips. Students may bring pre-glazed work and/or we will glaze bisque fired work on the first day of the workshop. We will discuss glazing, loading and firing strategies and students will get hands-on experience with firing. The Mendocino Art Center's Wood Salt Kiln is a large catenary arch cross draft kiln in a traditional design, it gives beautiful wood-fired salt affects. Our smaller Gas Soda Kiln is also a catenary arch kiln, it fires beautifully offering a range of carbon trapped and oxidized results.
