Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this class has been cancelled, however Peggy Magovern will be teaching an online version of this workshop.

Discover how colored pencils and wax pastels work together for beautiful results. Students will apply visual detail with the delicacy of pencils while adding intense color with the ease of pastels. Provided to every participant will be a common reference photo that depicts Mendocino’s beloved wildflowers. Also provided will be an “under-drawing” rendered on heavy mixed-media paper, ready for the application of color and detail. Lastly, both visual and written step-by-step instructions will be provided that describes how the instructor’s rendering of the same image was created. Demos will be given frequently, and individual attention will assure the student of an informative and enjoyable workshop experience.

An award-winning artist, instructor, and show judge, PEGGY MAGOVERN’s medium of choice is colored pencil. Although much of her work consists solely of colored pencil, there are some images where she adds either all or some of these other mediums; chalk, oil, and wax pastels, as well as watercolor and paper collage. With over 16 years of experience as an instructor for both private and group classes, Peggy has also directed workshops throughout California, and most recently with directing an international workshop in Los Angeles.

Prior to her career in teaching, Peggy worked in the competitive field of commercial illustration, using colored pencil to render highly detailed, hand-drawn images for fashion and editorial projects in both advertising and publishing projects nation-wide. Her work has appeared in publications that include The Wall Street Journal, the Smithsonian, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Oxford University Press, and the iconic Banana Republic catalog as the company’s Senior Illustrator.

When she decided to enter the field of fine art, she used her skill with colored pencils not only to create traditional realism, but to also explore uniquely different forms of visual expression. Represented in galleries in locations that have included Carmel, San Francisco, the greater Bay Area, and beautiful Mendocino. Her art hangs in corporate offices and private homes both in the United States and Britain. Ultimately, Peggy combined her love of creating art with teaching art. And from the joy she’s found with the exciting accomplishments of her students, to receiving accolades such as “Award of Distinction,” “Merit,” “Best of Show,” and “First Place,” has all made for a very gratifying combination indeed.
