This workshop is designed for beginning level artists who want to explore basic concepts of landscape painting using a limited palette of three to five colors, plus white. Topics include color mixing and theory, landscape composition and ideas, palette management, creating depth in the landscape, and use of painting materials for maximum effectiveness.

The workshop includes instructor demos, class exercises designed to build fundamental painting skills and concepts, guided practice and individual assistance. We will begin each day with a few painting exercises and then work on a landscape painting each day. Participants will have the opportunity to develop and finish one to two paintings over the course of the workshop.

Growing up in the Northwest corner of Montana, Patris was surrounded by the natural beauty of the great Creator’s handiwork. She expresses this admiration for the landscape as well as her love of the urban landscape in her artwork. She enjoys painting on location (en plein air), following in the tradition of the Barbizon School and the Impressionists. Her work is described as “peaceful and positive” – qualities she attributes to a connection she feels with the Creator and the natural world she observes in front of her easel.

“Patris sees with her eyes, but paints with her heart.”

For several years, Patris juggled a part-time job as an educator and program consultant for the California Department of Education with time to create artwork. She remained dedicated to her artistic goals, and in 2004, she left the education profession to pursue her art full time. As the “unofficial” Oak Park artist in her community, her paintings have been collected by developers and community leaders and exhibited at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, UC Davis, and the Sacramento State Capitol. Many of her landscape paintings have been purchased by private collectors. Patris has been juried into several national Plein Air Painting Events and participates in local art events. She has served as a commissioner with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Oak Park Business Association.

Her artistic path led her to open her own studio and art center near downtown Sacramento – the Patris Studio and Art Gallery – a popular northern California art venue for artists and art lovers. At her studio, Patris teaches weekly drawing and painting classes, coordinates artist workshops, art exhibits, and other events. Life drawing and painting sessions are scheduled several times a week at her studio, providing artists from all over the region with the opportunity to develop and hone their skills. Patris is also a popular teacher at the Crocker Art Museum, where studio classes are held in different subject matter. Additionally, she was selected as one of the artists featured on KVIE Channel 6 Public Television’s “Rob on the Road.”

In her own spacious studio gallery, Patris features her artwork along with works by other prominent artists in the region.

The main theme that runs throughout her artwork is her pursuit of painting and drawing from life – whether figurative, still life, or en plein air.
