In this online workshop, students will learn how clay can be treated as a two-dimensional canvas using sgraffito carving techniques. The term sgraffito originates from the Italian term graffiare meaning “to scratch.” It is a ceramic carving technique in which the colored, leather-hard surface is scratched through to reveal the clay body underneath.

Alissa will demonstrate step-by-step how to construct a three-dimensional wall tile, an ideal form for surface decoration. Then, using underglazes and carving techniques, she will explain how to build visually upon the ceramic surface to create depth and detailed imagery.

This workshop will transcend a simple how-to video series. Students, with Alissa’s guidance, will learn how to approach their pieces via a critical lens. Confidence in the studio will be developed and students will also have the opportunity to live chat with Alissa via Zoom after each demonstration to ask questions.

An interest in drawing is encouraged, but no prior experience is necessary!

ALISSA MITTL received her BA in Studio Art and Art History from Florida State University. She has apprenticed for working ceramic artists Sue Tirell (Pray, MT) and Julie Guyot (Tallahassee, FL), and received fellowships to attend workshops at both Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass Village, CO) and Penland School of Crafts (Bakersfield, NC).

Originally from southwest Florida, her work has shown both locally and nationally. Mittl completed two terms as a Ceramic Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center (Mendocino, CA) in August 2018. She then spent a year teaching and making artwork as a long-term Resident Artist at the Taos Clay Studio in Northern New Mexico from 2018-19. Mittl now lives, works, makes and sells her art in the historic town of Taos.
