Learn how to cast natural objects and make your waxwork more organic. In this workshop we will dive into a myriad of techniques used for casting organic forms in metal. Our first technique we will be covering is the organic casting process, an experimental technique where the outcome is hugely rewarding. You’ll be amazed by the shapes and the delicacy of even the most fragile organic specimens that you will be able to incorporate into your jewelry. We will also cover ways of making your jewelry take on the appearance of nature by working with wax. You will learn how to bend, stretch and manipulate the material that gives the finished piece a flawless, unique appearance. The culmination of the class will be melting your metal and vacuum casting your pieces yourself.
The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
HANNAH PLOWRIGHT is a multimedia jewelry artist who derives her designs from human and natural experience. She grew up in Berkeley, California, where she developed a deep sensitivity to nature and a desire to protect the beautiful things around her. She went to Earlham College for Environmental Anthropology and Metal aArts and continued to work in both fields post-graduation through activism, education, and tiny house construction. In recent years, Hannah has been establishing her own art jewelry business using her specialized techniques in wax working, casting, and hand fabrication to make jewelry that closely resembles or incorporates the natural world. By bringing nature onto the body through her jewelry, she hopes that people will find renewed awe for the earth.
