CLASS DESCRIPTION
Light, line, contour and color form the basis for experiments with abstraction. We’ll use thematic ideas from both nature and culture while exploring a variety of materials and techniques. Consideration of base layers, impacts of drawing and marks, optional additions of thin papers, additives such as sand and powdered pigments and layers of paint mixed with mediums are added and subtracted as we construct paintings. Working with layers helps students gain a better awareness of material interactions and their ability to create powerful surface dynamics.

Additional inspiration will come from both personal observations and images of works by contemporary abstract artists.

Although primarily aimed toward oil-based media, acrylic and gouache painters are welcome. Layering ideas and practice are valuable for all paint media. Bring the materials you like to use. The materials list offers suggestions for additions to your materials base as well as materials specific to this workshop.

“I love the concentration and challenge demanded by abstraction. There is delight in laying down a block of color, of transferring print, and transforming the work with paint. I make material histories to acknowledge the mystery of time and to affirm the certainty of change. Teaching is an integral part of my art practice, an opportunity for imaginative sharing of idea

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
SARA POST is an American abstract painter. Her work focuses on layering materials to create surface histories with occasional structural references to landscape and architecture. She frequently crosses media by employing painting, printmaking and collage – often in the same piece. Personal experiences of nature and culture are represented in color drenched layers of loose geometry and freely drawn lines. Her materials range from oil paint and pigment sticks mixed with wax and solvents to more unorthodox combinations of paper, house paint, charcoal, sand and cement.

Post’s mixed media abstractions are exhibited nationally and represented in many public and private collections. Her work is featured in the award-winning book, Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin. She teaches in art centers across the United States and at her studio, Art 26, in Davis, California. A graduate of Southern Methodist University, Post has a master’s degree in ceramics and art education from Northern Arizona University
