As Picasso said, “The Muse will find us working.” What is our Muse? Webster says: it means a person — especially a woman — who is a source of artistic inspiration. In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences.

This class will explore the idea that the “Muse finds you working.” We will work on a series of small abstract paintings on paper, working quickly for the first part of class, cranking out a small series of paintings in various timed exercises. Using acrylic paints, collage, and drawing media, we will work in multiples based on specific guidelines and examples. The speed of working will force us into working intuitively without putting too much thought into the work. Each series will develop from a given theme or technique that the instructor will present before the series is started.

To some, working quickly and intuitively can be intimidating. But working this way, without the pressure of producing a finished work can often free up the creative muse and break throughs will happen. Working in series gives your art practice focus and momentum; rather than face the blank canvas with too many possibilities to choose from, the parameters of a series create clarity of a starting point. Get un-stuck by working in multiples. The class is open to all levels and instructor will work individually with students at their level

Mixed media, acrylic paints, calligraphy, bookbinding, and fiber arts – I have loved them all since I first discovered each medium. I have a degree in graphic design and worked for many years as a publication, marketing and advertising designer as a way to make a living, but my passion has always been with color and paint, no matter what the surface. Personal artistic development has been a lifeline as I work my way through the challenges life has brought. My mixed media, book art, calligraphic and acrylic work has been shown in galleries and top juried art fairs nationwide. I believe that asking “what if?” and keeping a spirit of adventure and discovery is important as I follow my creative path and attempt to make something original. I love experimenting with texture, layers, marks, paint and dyes.

I have been a teaching artist for 30 years and I love to teach! Seeing the joy in a student’s face when they create something that pleases them brings me joy. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to inspire others to be creative. I love experimenting with texture, layers, marks, paint and dyes. I am proud to be a Certified Teaching Artist for Golden Paints and on the education teams for Gel Press and Marabu Paints
