CLASS DESCRIPTION
As Picasso said, “The Muse will find us working.” What is our Muse? Webster says Muse means a person – especially a woman – who is a source of artistic inspiration. In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. This class will explore the idea that the “Muse finds you working.”

We will work on a series of small abstract paintings on paper, we will work quickly for the first part of class, cranking out a small series of paintings in various timed exercises. Using acrylic paints, collage, and drawing media, we will work in multiples based on specific guidelines and examples. The speed of working will force us into working intuitively without putting too much thought into the work. Each series will develop from a given theme or technique that the instructor will present before the series is started.

To some, working quickly and intuitively can be intimidating. But working this way, without the pressure of producing a finished work can often free up the creative muse and break throughs will happen. Working in series gives your art practice focus and momentum; rather than face the blank canvas with too many possibilities to choose from, the parameters of a series create clarity of a starting point. Get un-stuck by working in multiples. The class is open to all levels and instructor will work individually with students at their level.

This is a home workshop with online video support and chatroom class discussions. For each lesson, students are supplied with tutorials, and online video demonstrations to successfully learn the new techniques. We will have four live video discussions. In addition, there will be 2 videos to watch on Vimeo on your own time between classes.
