Carol Warner’s Color on Metal technique is the perfect solution to making upscale jewelry, hollow ware or sculpture from non-precious materials. In this class Carol will guide students through her personal method for creating a full spectrum of patinas not seen before on metal. Class participants will spend five days learning how to create any color on any type of metal. Add a bold yet elegant quality to your work and build surface colors that range from delicate and translucent to opaque and powerful!

Explore chemical free approaches to patinas, using materials that are non-toxic and permanent. They can be mixed and matched to produce exact, exciting color outcomes. Students will produce a large array of experiments which will serve as examples for future reference. You will come away with the knowledge and confidence to personalize your future work in this manner.

As time permits Carol will share her knowledge of design and color theory. Class participants can choose to focus solely on this patina process or simultaneously combine coloration investigations with a creative metal project to take home. Students who opt to make a metal piece should plan to use familiar metalsmithing skills in order to reserve the majority of class time for exploring color techniques. Bringing completed works or found objects for experiments is another option that will help you make the most of your time and come away with finished pieces. Class participants will leave with samples and metal objects to serve as references for future use of Carol’s Color on Metal method, but most importantly they will take away a far-reaching command of color theory and application techniques that will last a lifetime.

The Susan E. Wood Jewelry Studio is available for use for a fee the days following your workshop should you like to continue practicing new skills or finish projects started in class. For more details or to schedule extra workdays, please contact Nancy Gardner, Jewelry/Metal Arts Coordinator.

CAROL WARNER has spent over 40 years as a professional artist, specializing in hand hammered hollow ware and creating a new approach to coloring metal. Venturing beyond traditional methods of patination she developed a system of handcrafting custom pigments which allow a full spectrum of colors. She has studied in Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, England and Mexico and holds a BA degree in Psychology from the University of Denver and both M.A. and M.F.A. degrees in Metals and Fibers from Northern Illinois University.

Carol’s work has been widely exhibited on a national and international level and was presented annually at Chicago’s prestigious Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art Exhibit by numerous galleries, including Ann Nathan Gallery from Chicago; Yaw Gallery from Bloomfield Hills, MI; and Maria Elena Kravetz Gallery from Cordoba, Argentina.
