Come participate in a wood firing in our new wood fire kiln. The E&M Express is a Bury Box Train Kiln that was completed in fall 2016. Its unique design allows for easy loading of wares and quick and efficient firing. This kiln will give great results in less time than larger anagama kilns and is a great learning tool for both beginner and well seasoned wood fire artists. This class will start off with a discussion of glazing and loading techniques and will be loaded the first day. Participants will be expected to take on wood shifts for stoking the kiln. This is a great time to learn about how this kiln fires, what woods work well and to gain experience in operating wood kilns. The kiln will be fired for three days with one day for cool down and the last day to unload and a discussion about the results and firing.
ABOUT THE KILN
The E&M Express was designed by Mitch Iburg who is a wood fire artist currently residing in Northern California. He has been an artist in resident at the Mendocino Art Center and has participated in many wood fires at the Art Center. The kiln was built by Mitch and Evan Hobart, the Mendocino Art Center’s ceramic studio program manager. Also many thanks to the participants that helped in the construction of this kiln.
