Draw, paint and print with oil pigment sticks as a primary medium or as added to cold wax, oil paint, solvents and alkyd gels. Richly pigmented oil sticks allow artists to draw and layer marks retaining intensity of color and integrity of line. Application of color may range from thin shims to densely textured layers applied with finger tips and brushes as well as brayers and palette knives. Stick based monotype techniques will be used to transfer marks to prepared surfaces. The flexibility of these materials underscores exploration of ideas based in culture and nature central to contemporary abstract painting. We’ll work on Arches oil paper including instructor demonstrations of methods to adhere oil paper to wood cradled board for exhibit. This is a wide ranging workshop focusing attention on what artist and printmaker Kathan Brown calls “strategies to create miracles.”
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
SARA POST is an abstract artist working in painting, printmaking and collage. Her work is the result of close observation transformed by imagination—of working with sense images as much as with appearances. Sara Post has been a practicing artist in northern California since 1981. She exhibits both locally and nationally. Her ceramics, prints and paintings work are represented in many private and corporate collections. She teaches at selected art centers and through her studio/classroom/gallery space, Art 26, in downtown Davis, CA.
I’m concerned with what it is to be present in the world—with what happens in time. Experiences of the extraordinary invention and majesty of nature as well as realities of the structure and limits involved in being human—all come together, layer upon layer. Contradictions abound. I try to work it out with paint colors, lines and shapes, using the language of abstraction.
