Jan Wittman

After being involved with art education for many years, I found myself doing art with blind and visually impaired students. We did drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printmaking… everything that had to do with art that could be adapted to their abilities. Eventually, we focused on basketry, starting with the simplest cardboard and yarn project. Some students clamored for additional basket making as I continued to give them more sophisticated projects. Since I had never been trained in basket making, I knew I had to stay one step ahead of the students. I started taking classes locally, then some in Washington, North Carolina and Ireland. When I do basketry, I feel a connection to the women who lived during the hunter/gatherer stage of human existence. I enjoy working with natural materials as they were accustomed to doing. I believe that the sculptural and tactile quality of my baskets relates directly to the many years of experience that I had working with students who were visually impaired.
