Jill Stanton

I create sculptural baskets and find this form of art tremendously satisfying. My basketry combines hand shaping and experimenting with color and texture, with the constant challenge of solving technical and spatial problems. This is adult play without the constraints of creating something ‘useful.’

Twining, coiling, plaiting, andcrocheting are my primary techniques. I use them with whatever materials pique my imagination: used clothes, plastic, painted paper, wire, and a panoply of natural fibers including kelp, pine needles, and palm inflorescence.

With an academic and research background in cultural anthropology, and a personal history of living abroad and collecting traditional woven handicrafts world-wide, I find constant inspiration in ancient basketry techniques and indigenous weaving patterns.  As a dedicated hiker, and amateur botanist, I am equally inspired by nature’s palette, which I try to mirror in my artwork.
