Workshop Description:
Explore how the natural world provides a rich playground for image creation and use the dynamic shapes of pottery as your canvas. This workshop will focus on learning the newsprint transfer technique from the creation of the image to transfer to the clay surface using a simple slab-built form, but the technique can be applied to any handbuilt or thrown leather hard surface. In addition, there will be demonstrations and discussions on how to arrange a composition across the form, the use of colored slips as a backdrop, and sgraffito and/or stamping. You will depart with your nature nature-inspired drawings/transfers you make during the course, as well as the skills to continue to create your own custom newsprint transfers.

About the Instructor: Amanda grew up in Washington state. She has always found comfort in the natural world around her. Amanda's functional ware pays homage to our food origins and the marvelously complex and deeply flawed systems which move food from the ground to our tables every day. She remains influenced by memories of her grandmother's garden and her time working on farms during college. Her practice is nourished by time spent tending her own food gardens, and by supporting her local farmers market- see the "Why CSA Matters" page.Amanda received a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art and a Bachelor of Art in Anthropology from Central Washington University. She then went on to pursue Post-Baccalaureate study in Ceramics at the University of Montana. Amanda has spent time as an artist in residence at well-known arts organizations across the country including The Morean Center for Clay in Saint Petersburg, Florida, and Belger Crane Yard Studios in Kansas City, Missouri.Amanda works as a full-time studio artist and regularly shows in invitational and national juried exhibitions. Her work is held in both public and private collections worldwide. Amanda recently served as the administrative coordinator at the Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project. She has now relocated to Sonoma, CA to pursue a Project Residency through the Sonoma Community Center.
