Workshop Description:
Two-Day Ceramics Workshop with Dwayne Sackey
Faceted + Altered Tea Bowls
Join Dwayne Sackey as he delves into his faceting and altering process, throwing and altering forms simultaneously to create gesture and movement. Materials, glazes, and firing are included with registration.
This workshop is geared toward potters who throw at an intermediate level. As ceramic artists, we often spend our first years on the wheel striving for uniformity. Ironically, the more successful we become at making identical forms, the more we begin to seek the dynamism of irregularity, work that carries a sense of movement, rhythm, and life.
This hands-on workshop will explore how to capture the movement of turning clay and how to use deliberate alterations to bring gesture and energy to your forms, reflecting the path the clay has taken to arrive at its final shape. Students will learn how to throw, alter, and shape their pieces as one fluid process, while incorporating Dwayne's unique approach to faceting to create dramatic surfaces and undulating forms.
Off the wheel, Dwayne will also cover his approach to layering surface decoration, applying porcelain slip and underglaze to create even more expressive surfaces, as well as the use of sodium silicate. Finishing considerations for faceted and textured work will be discussed, and time will be allotted for questions, discussion, and individual feedback.
About the Instructor:
Dwayne Sackey is a Portland based potter working with atmospheric firing techniques. He earned a BFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft in 2019. Dwayne Sackey does not aim for “flawlessness”, his work leaves a trace of a fluid, organic process and a human set of hands. Gentle curves, textured surfaces, and meandering lines speak through expressive brush strokes and luscious glazes.
Optional Materials: Students can bring their favorite clay working tools.
