Workshop Description:
In this workshop we will hone our throwing skills and explore techniques for altering thrown forms that add sculptural characteristics to our forms. Throwing demos will cover a range of functional pots, throwing large bellied forms, lids for altered forms, and techniques for making large work. Through discussions, demos and creative experimentation we'll cover altering forms on the wheel and at the leather hard stage with the goal of understanding the tension between the structure of the thrown form and the spontaneous gestures of alterations.
About the Instructor:
Ian Hazard-Bill started working with clay during high school in the SF Bay Area. He fell in love with the medium during an apprenticeship with Seth Cardew in Spain and has been making pots and sculptural vessels ever since. He has taught ceramic workshops around the country including at the Mendocino Art Center as well as numerous classes at community studios and at the College level. Currently he is a full time maker in San Rafael, Ca making pottery, sculptural vessels, and ceramic lighting and furniture.
Required Materials: Basic Throwing tools and a studio towel.
Optional Materials: Any favorite texture tools, stamps, or rollers, a Paddle or mallet, plastic bin and foam for transporting leather hard vessels since we will not be doing any firing
