Workshop Description:
In this beginner-friendly, three-hour workshop, discover the traditional Japanese art of Itajime shibori, a resist-dyeing technique that uses folded fabric, shaped blocks, and pressure to create striking geometric patterns. Learn to fold, clamp, and dye fabric while experimenting with shape and placement to create your own unique designs.

We’ll explore the rich history of indigo and the shibori dyeing process, with textile examples for inspiration. You’ll learn six different block-resist techniques, then select your favorites to experiment with and create your own unique textile designs.

Each student will receive three 100% cotton bandanas to dye. You’re also encouraged to bring one pre-washed, natural-fiber item (100% cotton, linen, rayon, or hemp) to transform. Your dyed fabrics can also become materials for future creative projects, including tapestry weaving, sewing, and other fiber arts.

These methods are drawn from Rachel’s own training and experience, with deep respect for the Japanese textile traditions from which they originate. Come ready to experiment, play with patterns, and immerse yourself in the beautiful indigo dyeing methods.

Class Structure (3 Hours):

  - First Hour: Demonstration of six traditional Shibori binding techniques, with examples of finished work. Includes a brief history of Japanese Shibori and indigo, exploring their place within the broader history and tradition of textiles.

  - Second Hour: Hands-on time for students to clamp, bind, and tie their fabrics, creating their own Shibori designs.

  - Third Hour: Dyeing fabric with indigo, including a discussion on the indigo vat, brief history, and the differences between natural and synthetic indigo.

About the Instructor:
Rachel Dove is an artist and educator working in ceramics and exploring textile materiality. Originally from the Midwest, she earned her BFA in ceramics and printmaking from the Columbus College of Art & Design and later received her MFA from the University of Tennessee. Rachel continued her studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology focusing on Textile/Surface Design.

After years immersed in textiles, Rachel returned to clay in 2017, integrating those experiences into a practice that combines the tactile nature and labor of both materials. Her work is rooted in curiosity, transformation, and a hands-on connection to process. She has exhibited regionally in juried and invitational shows and participated in residences at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Watershed Center for the Ceramics Arts, ME.

Rachel is a current artist in residence at Mendocino Art Center and lives in New York, where she teaches ceramics as an Adjunct Instructor and leads community workshops in textiles and clay.
