Workshop Description:
If you don’t have access to a loom or just want to create on the go, weaving with paper is a great activity. It's often first encountered in elementary school but, by changing the variables of the elements involved (strip width, shape, or color, thickness, texture, and even the direction they are placed) the results can be surprisingly complex. An assortment of paper will be available but feel free to bring your own; this is a great way to use your stash of gelli prints, marbled paper, or paste papers. During the workshop, we will warm up with a simple over-and-under weave, move on to more complex patterns, and finish with triaxial weaving or "mad weave" where strips run in three directions. You will also learn about tools that will make the paper cutting and weaving process easier and see examples by contemporary artists.

About the Instructor:
Rena Tom is an artist, writer, and independent curator based in Berkeley, CA who works across photography, printmaking, textiles, zines, and installation. Anchored by the intimate, embodied nature of craft, she utilizes mundane objects, optical illusions, and found imagery to reframe everyday experience and destabilize assumptions about autonomy and the nature of participation. She runs the micropublishing project Not Great, Not Terrible, is a volunteer Risograph printer at community printshop Reprographixxx, and produces highly collaborative, large-scale participatory art installations, plus the occasional pirate radio broadcast.
