Workshop Description:
Reduction cut printmaking is an exciting method of building up colors by carving into a single plate, unlike traditional Japanese multi-plate block prints. We will explore drawing and design ideas, work with Japanese carving tools with an emphasis on safety, and engage in the art of hand printing while demonstrating different methods of registration and ink modifiers.
This dynamic printmaking technique has been embraced by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Elizabeth Catlett, who explored reduction linocut processes to create bold, layered color prints.
About the Instructor:
Relief printmaking has been Nicholas Collins’ passion for over 18 years. For him, this unique medium stands apart from other graphic art forms because its essence lies in the physical act of carving. Whether working with wood or linoleum, he finds that carving an image into blocks infuses the prints with a sculptural energy that brings them to life. Through the process of drawing, carving, and printing—whether guided by theme, technique, or both—each print naturally leads to the next, creating an ongoing and deeply rewarding journey. Nicholas enjoys working with artists of all levels in this medium, as each session brings new discoveries and a sense of creative excitement.
