Workshop Description:
SALT PRINTS are the oldest form of photographic printing. They are the the child of two emergences in European thought; the discovery of the camera obscure as a method for projecting images, and the discovery that certain substances are altered by exposure to sunlight. A very simple method both in practice and material, salt printing was the first form of photographic printing made available to the public in London in 1850s.

In this workshop we will go through the entire process of creating salt prints. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have a series of prints to take home with them, along with the knowledge of a new alternative photographic process to add to their oeuvre. The process will include: creating our own photo sensitive paper, creating images with either physical objects or
negatives, exposing them to sunlight, developing the prints, washing the prints and drying them.

We will be focusing on contact prints made with physical objects, rather than prints made with enlarged negatives (which in themselves take a workshop to create,) however, if you happen to have enlarged negatives and would like to try printing with them, please bring them along! You will be responsible for bringing the objects you wish to print with. When thinking of the selection
of things to bring consider opacity, texture, and silhouette. Bringing a notebook and pencil is also recommended, all photographic materials and paper will be provided. Please see the attached images for inspiration!
