The materials fee for this workshop is $70 per student and includes a mid sized tapestry loom, yarn, raffia, fabric and other materials provided by the instructor. Students will be able to take the tapestry loom home, after the workshop, as part of this class fee.

Workshop Description:
In this class the students will learn the fundamentals of tapestry weaving on a frame loom and beyond. They can learn up to 7 different stitch techniques and experiment with floating threads, free space and improvised weaving. The weavings will utilizing unexpected found material and upcycled fabric. We will also spend a little time foraging the nature around Mendocino Art Center for plant material that students can incorporate into their weavings. (taking only small amounts that will not harm the natural environment or pieces that have already fallen to the ground). Students will learn how to remove the weaving and finish the ends to have a finished artwork ready to hang!

About the Instructor:
Hope Ngozi Okere is a Nigerian-American interdisciplinary artist, based in Los Angeles, CA. Her work exists at the intersection of sculpture, fiber, and movement. Informing her art praxis are theories of Afro-Futurism, neo-conceptualism, and African and modern dance. She also explores dualities, distortions, translations, and hybridity. She holds an MFA from the University of California Santa Barbara and a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC.

Hope has attended residencies and workshops at Haystack School of Craft, Yucca Valley Material lab, The Textile Art Center, Pioneer Works, and Texere in Oaxaca, MX.

Optional Materials: Old fabric scraps, old clothing, beads, and any found material you want to put into your weaving.
