Workshop Description:
In this one-day workshop, students will explore the fundamentals of square stitch bead weaving, an off-loom technique that creates a structured, grid-like pattern. Using Japanese Toho Treasure beads, participants will learn how to stitch beads together to form a flat surface, building color and pattern row by row.
With an emphasis on creative exploration, students will design and complete a small abstract beaded piece. Along the way, they will gain an understanding of tension and alignment while developing a strong foundation in this versatile technique.
Due to the detailed nature of this artform we will be holding this workshop in Jewelry Studio.
About the Instructor:
Carrie Botto is a self-taught multimedia weaver based in New Mexico. She is inspired by the rich colors of natural dyes and the freedom of creating intuitively, allowing each piece to evolve organically. In her basketry, she works with pine needles, yucca, paper, and raffia, incorporating beads and assorted cords to create jewelry, wall art, and sculptural forms.
