Workshop Description:
In this workshop, we will make miniature cups with small trays to hold them. Using hand building techniques, participants will leave with a basic understanding of the steps involved in creating a ceramic work from start to finish. This workshop is available to those with no experience in ceramics and for anyone interested in incorporating spiritual practice into their making process.
Workshop studio sessions will integrate reflective writing, visualizations, and discussion. We will consider the meaning of vessels in spiritual modalities such as Tarot, Christianity, and Taoism. What we learn from these explorations will inform our creative decisions. Building off these reflections, we will use our cups together in a guided group ritual and reflection on the final day.
This three day workshop spans over a week’s time to allow time for drying and firing processes.
About the Instructor:
Sun Park is an interdisciplinary artist who explores the evolution of the self through embodied spirituality. Working across sensory-rich installations, interactive ritual, drawing, ceramics, video, and writing, they construct personal sanctuaries and mythologies that trace a path from white evangelical Christianity toward a new reality shaped by their research into saju (Korean astrology), trans embodiment, and worldmaking.
They were an Angus L. Graham Memorial Awardee for Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts (Edgecomb, ME) and are currently a Creative in Residence at The Ruby (San Francisco, CA) Park has taught at San Francisco State University, Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), Union College (Schenectady, NY), and Winslow House (Vallejo, CA). They have performed interactive rituals at Root Division, 41 Ross (San Francisco, CA) and at the PAAC x HA:N retreat (Stony Point, NY).
Required Materials: Notebook/sketchbook and writing utensil. We will be using this primarily to write but there will be opportunities to draw as well if that is of interest to you.
Optional Materials: If you have your own clay tools (wire tool, any tools to create texture, etc.) feel free to bring but not necessary.
