Workshop Description:
With the price of precious metals these days, every little piece counts! That’s why recycling and reusing your scrap is more important than ever. In this workshop we will start by discussing the alloying process – how to and the whys of. Every different alloy has different characteristics, each of which has been formulated for specific purposes and uses. After understanding the basics of alloying we will then get to work preparing your scrap and/or purchased metal for casting into ingots. These ingots are then processed into sheet or wire stock of various shapes and gauges. Not only can this save you money on materials, the skills learned can be invaluable when, for example, you need that 2” piece of 20 gauge round wire to finish the piece and you only have a 8 gauge square!
About the Instructor:
Nancy Gardner has been making fine jewelry in Mendocino since 1985. As a child in Clarence, New York, she spent hours playing with her grandmother’s jewelry, which was kept in a brown velvet box in the attic. Nancy received her BA in design, concentration in metalsmithing at the University of New York, and went on to learn old world goldsmithing from master craftsmen in Italy and Portugal. She has participated in a number of international shows, and has taught silver and gold jewelry fabrication both in Europe and at the Mendocino Art Center. With a particular attraction to Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, Nancy brings a lifetime of technical expertise and an ongoing respect and love for her materials to her artistic process. Her one of a kind jewelry, much inspired by her elegant Grandmother, can be seen at her unique working studio and gallery space.
