Workshop Description:
In this special workshop, the instructor is generously donating their time and talents in support of the MAC and to make taking a workshop more affordable to our broader ceramics community.
This workshop will allow the intermediate potter who is already confident centering and throwing 3+ pounds of clay to build on their skills to make a variety of sectional forms. We will learn how to make forms like two part vases, pitchers, pedestal bowls, platters and more. We will cover the techniques of throwing larger amounts of clay confidently, designing a two part form, throwing precisely to fit pieces together, and joining sections of multi-part forms. We will cover many different methods of making sectional forms which ultimately result in larger, taller work. This workshop will focus on throwing, and I encourage students to put their emphasis on skill building rather than having a large body of work to keep (I am a huge proponent of reclaiming your clay - practice makes progress!). You will be able to transport your greenware home if that appeals to you. The skills learned in this course will empower students to boldly create sectional work and will be widely applicable beyond the course.
About the Instructor:
Everett Kinkade Smet is an artist who loves to connect with others through all creative mediums ,but especially clay. She lives in Humboldt County, California and has a decade of pottery experience and years of teaching experience both as a ceramics instructor and creativity building workshop host. Above all else, she encourages creative freedom and authenticity through her workshops. Her maker's mark features her initials which form the shape of a butterfly, representing metamorphosis. She believes metamorphosis occurs on a personal level through the transformative power of art and creativity, which is why she dedicates time to teaching and leading workshops. Metamorphosis also occurs as a critical part of ceramics, which undergo many changes during the process of forming, firing and glazing work.
Her art draws inspiration from joyful moments spent outside, both with herself and with loved ones. She incorporates texture and rich, natural tones in her art to echo the beauty of the outdoors. She seeks to make art that deepens earth and human connections and enhances daily life with its functional beauty.
