Workshop Description:
Students will gain new skills in forming copper and steel tubing into elegant, tapered tendrils with fold-formed embellishments. This class focuses on innovative metal manipulation techniques, resulting in designs that are both visually striking and inherently strong yet lightweight. Students can apply these elegant forms for a range of applications, from delicate jewelry like bracelets and neckpieces to impactful, large-scale sculptural components. No prior jewelry fabrication experience is necessary to participate, though it can be beneficial. After a dinner break students will be welcome to return to the jewelry studio for open studio time to work on their projects.
About the Instructor:
Ira Sherman has been exploring the boundaries of metal fabrication and design since the early 1970s, both as a highly successful custom goldsmith and jeweler and as an internationally recognized sculptor. His innovative metal forming techniques have been widely taught to students and professional designers around the world. Parts of his current traveling exhibitions, "Panaceas to Persistent Problems" and "Impenetrable Devices," have been displayed in exhibitions in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Israel, and Japan; the Spertus Museum, the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, the Regional Transportation District of Denver Public Art Collection and the National Ornamental Metal Museum have acquired Sherman artwork for their permanent collections.
Sherman is a founding Chairperson of the Colorado Metalsmithing Association and is a 20-year member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths. He has helped develop programs for non-profit art organizations as well as religious, educational, and community organizations.
